1970s

The 70s were years of a great deal of experimentation for Henry, as he tackles the problem of how to convey a visual idea. Bold blocks of colour are raised from the picture plane in order to explore the interaction of colour at the edges of volumes; these 'relief' paintings give way to subtler washes, where those same edges ethereally merge into one another; later, textured surfaces are employed to distil the physicality of landscapes.
